We are celebrating 100 Days in School this week! It's hard to believe that we have been in school that long. There is still so much to do before the end of the year. Please continue to work with your child on our Homework BINGO or their independent reading contract. Don't forget to log your reading minutes to earn the Roaring Springs day pass this spring. These must be turned in before spring break with a total of 600 minutes.
Dads and Doughnuts was a huge success! Thank you for taking time out of your day to come to school with your child. Moms, look forward to your morning time with your child in April.
Our February music program time has changed. Due to a conflict with the Kindergarten plans we will be moving our time to 10:00 am on Thursday, February 14th. I am sorry if this has caused any problems with your schedule. We will be begin our Valentine's party at 1:15.
Children can begin bringing in Valentines for their classmates next week. I am sending home a class list. I also need a few parents who would like to plan the treats and games on Valentines Day. Please let me know if you can help.
This week progress reports are available. Please log on to family access https://skyweb.msd134.org/ to view your child's grades. Please feel free to call me to make an appointment if you have any questions or concerns.
We have had a bad supply pencils this year! They have not sharpened well and many had broken lead inside the pencils. I have never ran out of pencils before, but due to the poor quality the suppliers are giving us, we are in need of pencils. Please send in one package of pencils with your child this week. The best pencils we have had are the Ticonderoga. They cost a little more, but I don't waste them by sharpening them to 50% before the children even use them. You can find these at Costco, office supply stores and I think at Walmart. Also, I am in need of empty vegetable cans to organize our colored pencils. I would prefer the large size, (but not the gallon).
There is no school on February 15-18th. Enjoy a long weekend with your child(ren). I am looking forward to some family time myself.

January 22-25
The temperatures haven't changed...DRATS! Please make sure your child comes to school with warm clothes. Even though the temperatures are low, they need some fresh air and a break from the classroom so we take them outside 2-3 times a day for about 10 minutes. Hats, mittens and warm coats are essential.
Mark your calendars for February 14th. We will be presenting our First Grade music program at 1:00 in the gym. We will then continue to celebrate Valentine's day back in our room with a small party. Please let me know if you would like to help with the planning of this party.
Many parents are asking for additional homework. We decided to scale back on homework due to family activities this year, so all math, spelling and reading homework has been consolidated into my BINGO homework. Use this as a guide. If your child needs more complicated activities, use the math skill and add more difficult numbers, computations or word problems. If your child is at grade level in reading, have them read more difficult books in place of their book ring and practice summarizing or retelling the story. There are many websites posted on our school website that allow children to progress at their pace in both reading and math. Check them out and use this tool in place of a suggested activity.
Don't forget the PTA meeting on January 25th from 12-1. This is an excellent way to get connected with parents and activities at the school. They are an amazing group of parents that work so hard to make sure this school excels in meeting their child's needs. I can't tell you how important this group is and what a difference they make in our school. Please consider becoming an active parent in this organization. Come and check it out this Friday, there's no obligation.
January 31st in another important date. It is our annual Dad's and Donuts! Dad's are invited to come to school at 7:00 and enjoy a donut with their child(ren). The students are then given a book and get to show dads their school. It's a great time and the kids love it! If dad isn't available or is unable to come, please feel free to invite another role model. We want all students to come (but they must have an adult present). Please RSVP.
